Let’s make Local Lekker Again this week on #AfricaBBC

With all the negativity surrounding our incredible country, I think it’s time to start turning around this negativity and start focusing on the good. I dare not even mention “O” word whose surname rhymes with Pretorius…  And don’t even get me started on those police officers who dragged the Mozambican taxi driver behind their car.

Rather, I think it’s time we start looking at the good we can find in, not just South Africa, but on the African continent… The vast variety of landscapes and cultures, food and all that other good stuff we can find. On that note, I think you might dig this video… But before the video, here’s a little background info:

The #AfricaBBC series is drawing near to its conclusion, with only two regions remaining to be showcased on BBC Knowledge, DStv Channel 184. This week’s episode surprises viewers with never seen before footage from the Cape.  The film crew pushed themselves to the limits… Especially when one cameraman positioned himself on a whale carcass to capture the footage of it being feasted on by 30 Great White Sharks. The BBC crew were also the first to film unique tropical butterflies in a Mozambican rainforest, thanks to a discovery made on Google Earth… Proof that Google knows freaking everything!

#AfricaBBC is presented by David Attenborough, and has already pulled on the heart-strings of many South Africans. But this Sunday, 10 March 2013, at 18:00, you best be tuning into BBC Knowledge to watch episode four of THIS…

Celebrating this astonishing series, BBC Knowledge in association with Getaway Magazine are offering viewers the chance to win an exclusive East African adventure holiday through Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Zanzibar. To enter, post a personal picture of Africa and/or its wildlife via a tweet using #AfricaBBC or on Getaway Magazine’s Facebook page. Each week the top finalists are selected, so if your pictures haven’t made it yet you still have until 24 March 2013 to submit your African snapshots. Time to put those photography skills to the test. Maybe mix it up with some Instagram filters for the Hipsters out there?

You can catch the #AfricaBBC series on BBC Knowledge at 18:00, DStv Channel 184.  Terms and conditions can be found here and here.

2012 Recap – The Moments that Made 2012

There’s no doubt that 2012 was a year to remember, for good or for worse. Who thought we would see 2013, with the Mayan apocalypse conspiracy and all that? Lying in bed last night and unable to sleep and awaiting the beginning of the work starting on the 7th of January, it got me thinking about the year that had passed and what some of the highlights and lowlights were for me personally, and for everyone as a whole. Some events in the 2012 may have affected, for better or worse, some more than others.

I started thinking of my great-grandmother, one of my good friends Tegan and another friend of mine Jamin who passed away this year… All sad memories. But, what of the things that made 2012 a great one? What were some of the things that stood out for you in 2012? Well… Here’s some of the highlights and lowlights of 2012, the best and worst of’s, the moments that stood out(for whatever reason):

The Worst of 2012:

Lets leave the best for last… Some of the worst things to come out of 2012 were…

Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy hit during October 2012 and ended up being the largest Atlantic hurricane on record. As a result of her devastation, 253 people were killed and an estimated $65.6 billion (USD) damages were caused.

Steve JobsSteve Jobs dates

After a relapse from pancreatic cancer, Steve Jobs passed away on October 5th 2012 at the age of 56. After his death, Apple started a page in dedication to their former CEO entitled “Remembering Steve“.

Scaffolding Collapse At Linkin Park Concert In Cape Town

After a long-awaited stop by Linkin Park to sunny South Africa, tragedy struck at the Lucozade promo stand. Intense gale-force winds resulted in the scaffolding’s collapse ended up killing one person and injuring 19 others.

Lance Arm-not-so-Strong

2012 Also saw the fall of Lance Armstrong. After it was discovered that Lance Armstrong was indeed using performance enhancing drugs, sponsors like Nike, Trek, and Oakley all cut their ties with him and Lance resigned from the Livestrong foundation board. The Cycling’s world governing body also stripped him of his titles that he had accumulated over the years.

Best or Worst?

In something that I’m not sure is a god or bad thing, we have the Apocalypse, Armageddon, the end of the world as we know it…

The Mayans

2012 Movie poster

For many, 2012 started as what they believed to be the last year in existence in the universe. In what was one of the most spoken about stories during 2012, the world was to end on the 21st of December 2012. Unfortunately(for some), the world didn’t end and we’re still here! Many people went to extreme lengths and spent large sums of money in preparations just in case the Mayan’s were right.

My view… The Mayans were dyslexic and got the date wrong. The world will end in 2102.. or was it 2120?

Enough of the bad stuff…

The Best of 2012:

Sitting thinking about 2012, I’ve realised that 2012 was actually a good year, regardless of all the bad that happened. Why? Well as a result of all the bad, we’ve learned a lot out of 2012. Without the trials, rough patches, laughter and excitement of 2012, we wouldn’t know how to deal with the situations in the future, or how to avoid getting into the situations again.

Take this for example:

Felix Baumgartner’s Stratos Jump

Free falling from almost 39km above the surface of the earth and reaching 1,342kph while crushing the sound barrier, Felix Baumgartner’s Space Jump was a major highlight of 2012. This particular moment in 2012 lead to the following Neil Armstrong styled quote:

“Sometimes you have to go up really high to understand how small you really are”

Felix Baumgartner

Linkin Park Performing in South Africa

Despite what happened at the Cape Town leg of the “Living Things” world tour, Linkin Park finally made their way to South Africa. I was fortunate enough to be a the Cape Town show and loved every second of it. 2012 Taught me that Linkin Park are still one of the best bands out there and that their shows are amazing at the least!

Portland actor, Isaac Lamb, created one of the most elaborate ways imaginable to ask his girlfriend to marry him. #Winning

Mooooovies of 2012

2012 Also saw the release of some awesome and not so awesome movies during the year. In no specific order, here are some of the best and worst movies of 2012:

21 Jump Street What to Expect When You’re Expecting
The Avengers Battleship

Games like Farcry3, Mass Effect 3 and Fifa 13 to name just 3 I got my hands on, was released. With gaming graphics, story lines and gameplay getting better by the day, games of 2012 were groundbreaking in one way or another.

Hey, this is crazy… But 2012 had some of the best parody video clips, maybe?

With all the music being released last year, some even better parody clips made their way onto the interwebs too.

Here are my top 5 parody clips of 2012:

4. Fun – We’re Not Young (Yahoo!’s SketchY Parody)

3. Some Study That I Used to Know (Gotye Parody)

2012 love it or hate it…

Whatever your reasons for loving or hating 2012, just remember that how you experienced the year is dependent on your outlook on it and your attitude toward it… If you went into something with animosity during 2012, surely that would have made you despise that specific moment during the year more, right? It’s all about outlook and perspective. So embrace 2013.. Take 2013 for all it’s worth! Look for opportunities to make each day better than the next. To hell with resolutions for the year, they tend to lead to some disappointments if you don’t achieve them.

My view is that 2013 shouldn’t have too much expectation put on top of it. Why burden the year ahead before you’ve already gotten into it properly with unattainable resolutions. Remember that happiness is found in the moments spent with family and friends.

If 2012 could have taught us 1 thing, it’s found in the words a friend of mine mentioned to me recently:

Some Things Fall Apart, So Other Things Can Fall Together

Keep in mind, things in 2012 could have been worse… You could have been one of the people in this:

The Truth About Unicorns True Identity and Zebra Colouring Discovery Revealed

What started as a thought about zebras and their stripes that I posted as a status on Facebook, has led to a major discovery of all time…

Zebras & Unicorns

Just think about this for a minute…

Imagine zebra’s had to earn their stripes!

This statement has led the genius brain of a good friend of mine and I to a discovering something truly phenomenal!!

Some say that unicorns anorexic rhinos, while other believe unicorns are actually just horny, albino, zebras… But I beg to differ…..

What is this you might have asked?

Well, we have discovered the truth about Zebra / Unicorn culture and hierarchy.  Basically, in a sense, their life is similar to the life of a butterfly. What happens is, a Zebra (in its early life) is actually a unicorn. During their daily duties of  eating skittles and playing in rainbows, unicorns get stripes for doing good unicorn things! What exactly these “well-behaved unicorn actions” are, is still a myth. What we do know is, once a unicorn has successfully earned enough stripes, the unicorn overseers put the unicorn on pension. I mean even a unicorn needs to be able to live out the last potion of its life being happy with other pensioned unicorns, while basking in the glow of colourful rainbows and younger unicorns, eating skittles!

Once a unicorn is placed on pension, they have earned all their stripes for their good deeds, making them a zebra… Seeing the caterpillar/butterfly link here? This, therefore, means that a Zebra is actually a Unicorn on retirement; and that a unicorn is a young zebra. As a result of these findings, we have also established that the Kruger National Park is the retirement village for well-behaved Unicorns who have earned their all  their stripes and became zebras! You might ask:

“Why don’t zebras have horns?”

… This is because just as people have false teeth and lose their teeth, unicorns lose their horns. A benefit of this is to help disguise them in their old age, and is also why you wouldn’t know that the zebra you just saw is actually a unicorn on pension!

All of this has led us to a further discovery…

This discovery, that zebras are unicorns on retirement, leads us to believe we’ve cracked another mystery too…

Zebras are white with black stripes!

We also believe, then, that unicorns aren’t anorexic rhinos, but actually that rhinos are like the “black sheep” of the unicorn/zebra culture.

A lot to process, I know

But now you know the truth about unicorns, their identity and that they are actually young zebras… You’ve also just learnt that zebras are aged, well-behaved unicorns, as they have earned their stripes from doing good deeds while still a unicorn!

An Apple A Day, Might Mean You Need Some Help!

I’ve been helping a few people recently with their Apple device and as a result, this morning, I decided to start a section to my blog dealing specifically with helping people with the issues that they may come across when using their iPhone’s, iPad’s or even in iTunes.

I guess it all started back in the Summer of ’69. No no, that’s a joke. It started about 2 years ago when I bought myself my first Apple product. The phone 32GB 3GS. The original plan was that I wanted to go overseas to the UK and while I was there, I would buy myself a new phone. So I started researching the options and phones available on the market. My dad, dear old dad, often sitting next to me and supposed to be working while I researched the idea, would look over my shoulder to see what I was up to. I noticed his curiosity and started showing him the features and specs of the iPhone at the time.

Well, my plans to go over and visit the family in the UK fell flat, but I still wanted to get myself an iPhone. Looking around then at local shops in the Gauteng area and realising the price of the phone, I got a bit despondent. Fear not though, because I had myself a part-time job at Toys ‘R Us(being in school still at the time) in their electronics department, selling Playstations, Wii consoles, games, DVD’s and the rest, I saved up for the year and by November I could buy the phone. This is where the useless info about my dad checking out the phone comes in. See, what happened was… My research and showing him the iPhone impressed him to the point that he too wanted an iPhone. So he bought himself one too, identical to the one I got.

Being interested in all things geek… Well, almost all things, and loving technology and advances therein, I was fascinated by new iPhone and was quick to find little tips and trick when using the iPhone and iTunes. See, now my dad (also being a guy interested in the technology side of things) learnt many things too, but he would often ask for my help when. This meant I would often help him with sorting out some issues on his iPhone or iTunes, showing him some of the things I had learnt, but not everything 😛 You’ve got to keep some things for yourself, to keep others intrigued…

All was well for a while until my dad got his new iPhone 4 and gave his 3GS to my mum. Fortunately for me, helping my mom meant teaching her the basics. Then came my little brother’s iPod Touch. Now this kid just learns things straight away from watching you, so you’ve got to watch what you how him sometimes… It wasn’t long after that, when my dad got his iPad. This meant getting to fiddle on it and learn some tips and tricks on there too. Obviously it also meant teaching my old man how some of the stuff was done.

At this point, it’s important to note that we are now a family of Apple users and really love the products. My dad raves about them to all his colleagues and the family also notice the things we do on them. This meant that a few family members got themselves Apple iSomethings too and, my dad being my dad, mentioned how I would always help him with his issues. This didn’t include family members and colleagues of his that I may know, but those from within the company he works for too. See the thing is my dad will tell the people about the things they can do or need to get or something, which is all good and well, but the issue comes in most of the time when they ask him how to do the things he’s said. That’s when my contact details exchanges address books and I get calls asking for help.

Lately I would receive phone calls with the opening line “Hi. Is this Glynn?… I got your number from your father, he said you can help me with my iPhone/iPad/iTunes.” Pity I don’t know which of the lady callers, calling me are attractive and can tell them to hold onto my number or call me to just chat again. No no, I make joke… So I’ve been helping a few people lately and this meant repeating myself often to the different people. I really don’t mind helping people, I actually quite enjoy helping people around me when I know how…

So, it’s because of this that I decided to start a new blog, apart from this blog, where I will do my best to help others with issues and whatnot with their Apple iDevices, through my experiences and things I’ve learnt over time. As of earlier today, the page “How To Work My Apple Device” has gone up and I will start with something basic for my first article.

I believe that the page could help a few people and possibly give me the chance to impart some of my knowledge along the way. This is something new for me and I’m looking forward to this little adventure on the interwebs. I invite you to join me on the ride, but also to let me know if there are issues you may have with you Apple products, so I can see where I can help with.

Discovering & Starting Something New

Try Something New

Nearing the end of the year I look back on the year that’s passed and think about some of the highlights of the year and some of the things you hoped you’d forget, I found myself looking for some kind of “outlet” to keep myself busy and entertained. Not wanting to overdo things with certain friendships and find new ones that find that share similar likes too, I began to expand my  circle of friends, often contacting and re-establishing past friendships to find things I enjoy… It was during this that I took up a couple new hobbies, if you want to call it that…

Well, it started just before I moved to Cape Town when I joined some friends to the local cable ski where I was first introduced to wakeboarding behind a cable and not a boat. Not knowing what to expect, I gave it a try. Failing rather miserably, I  was determined to keep at it and get it right… It took a couple “launches” to get going, but get it right, I did! Managing only to make it down the first straight I started to get the hang of it.

Then about a month later I moved to Cape Town and wasn’t able to wakeboard again, because  I don’t have my own board and gear. Fortunately, 6 months later I moved Back to Gauteng and after a few weeks I joined up with my wakeboarding buddy and started again. Only getting to go wakeboarding a few times since I’ve been back I’ve made the decision to take up the sport more actively and am starting the process to get my own board and gear… You can’t sponge off people for too long, and I want my own stuff, you know how it goes.

Wakeboarding has given me the opportunity to find something to do, something other than lounging at home and being lazy, while being physically active and giving me the chance to often just clear my head. It’s something to do where you can meet more people and make some new friends too. If they at the wake park, they clearly going to like something you do. watching and learning from some of the more experienced guys also helps you meet others whose common interests and likeness are even closer to your own, starting with small things like how you ride(left or right foot forward), riding style and more. Although I still haven’t made it completely around, my goal: make it completely around and improve my riding skill is driven by my determination and being there virtually every weekend for the past 2 months or so.

Not all of us are into taking up something like wakeboarding and often also need to find another outlet or medium of clearing their head. Everyone needs something like this when they have a lot on their minds… Expanding your circle of friends helps as you can find others whose interests and likes you share. Not everyone wants something physically demanding like the wakeboarding, and that is where my Blogging came in. I may not be an active “blogger” like many others out there, but I use my blog to sit down and think… Often giving me the chance to think about things I probably wouldn’t have otherwise and put those thought to paper, so to speak.

I sometimes wish I had the creativity to keep my blog updated more regularly like many other people do, as it’s often quite interesting to read and notice how they think and reason. However I like to do a little it of everything and that is why I try things less physically demanding like a bit of the blogging, as well as something more physically demanding like wakeboarding and trying to gym as often as possible…

It may not be quite at its end, but the year is almost up and it’s time to take out the old and be in with the new… Sometimes a little self-reflection is all you need to get a clearer perspective on where you want to be and how you plan on getting to that point. If you have a moment to spare, I highly recommend this… Take a few minutes and think to yourself “What is there that I can give a try”… If everyone does and has something interesting they do in their spare time like wakeboarding, cycling, rock climbing or whatever, the world will definitely be a lot less dull and so will your friends. With over the 7 billion mark, it can get rather dull if people just stick to the usual mundane things.

Go out, find something new and exciting to do. It doesn’t have to be drastic, just something exciting and tell the people you know to do it also.

With that in mind…

Always remember, give a jackass an education and you’ll have a smartass!

Losing Someone Special

Its about 8 days and 13 hours today that I got the news that one of my dearest friends, who was like a sister to me, passed away unexpectedly. It leaves a massive gap in who and what you are…. Well for me that is.

Lynn is the first person I was close to that I’ve lost to the evil known as death…. So dealing with what’s happened since receiving word of the news has been a first for me. And one I don’t wish on any of my worst enemies(not that I really have any, that I know of).

The first few minutes are pure shock…. You don’t know what’s going on, you try to figure out if what you heard is what was actually said and then you break apart. Yes, I cried, I’m man enough to admit that, because if you don’t, well then you either have some major issues, or you are just a really heartless, lost soul.

Being one of the first people to receive the news, I took on the responsibility to let other mutual friends know what’s happened. You feel like crap when you tell people, and hearing their reaction to the news doesn’t help much for your already difficult situation wherein you’re trying your very best to maintain your composure. I called one of my friends, who you could clearly hear was out somewhere. His first reaction was “Dude if this is some kind of f***ed up joke…” Then silence as I told him again, “Dude, are you sure?” are the words I heard next. This went on for about another minute or so, but it felt like forever. He rushed to his car and called me again to tell me that he was making his way to JHB from PTA to see Lynn’s ex boyfriend, another mutual friend, who was still quite in love with her and had just got the news and wasn’t taking it well… I was glad, under the circumstances, that I never had to be the one to tell Lynn’s ex the news. Because according to what I was told from his reaction, you could see him break apart…. Not a pretty sight, but you can’t help but feel the same……

So if you haven’t lost anyone close to you, I’m not going sugar-coat it for you, it’s one of the most agonising things you will probably ever go through. But the saying you will always hear after people have heard about your loss, yes the “In time it becomes easier” line, is very true. It’s 6 days now, flying to Cape Town for the funeral, today since I got the news, and about 2 days after getting the news, each day you feel a little more able to smile and be yourself around others, but the feelings are overcome by guilt, feeling wrong that you could smile at something when your loved one is no longer with us. It’s all a very emotionally confusing time….Yeah I know i said it’s just over a week in the beginning of this article, but that’s when it’ll probably be posted and made live, after reviewing it a couple of times and making sure it’s got my stamp of approval.

Anyways, getting back to topic, it took me a day or two to start feeling a bit better. Yes, with each day, time begins to fill the huge gap that’s been left in your heart that mourns and yearns to see that person again, but it doesn’t make it all go away. Some days are also worse than others… Like you might be felling okay in the morning, then during the day, you hear a song or something that reminds you of something you did together, and it throws you 10 steps back, after you’ve been just barely able to make one step forward.

Flying to Cape Town on this early, and chilly August Friday morning, while I type the article, has given me a lot of time to think about my dear friend and things we did together…

I will never forget the new years eve weekend of 2006/2007…. Lynn’s family and my family hadn’t been friends for all that long, but we got along really well, so we decided we’d go up to this trout farm for the weekend. The first night was really great and we got to spend some time together getting to know each other better. The last night, on new years eve, we saw clouds coming in and didn’t think anything of it… Our parents were outside cooking dinner, while Lynn, her 2 other sisters, my brother and I were inside playing 30 Seconds. The next thing, we noticed that the clouds and mist had come in so dense and thick that we couldn’t even see a meter away from the door, and our parents weren’t visible through all this…. Then the rain started and before we knew it, it had rained so much that the trout dams started to overflow and the dirt, which was now a mud road that looked like a stream, had channelled the water in such a way that it was now coming into the house. Then we all hit panic stations. We grabbed everything we could carry and the little bit of food we could, and we had to go up to the house on the hill, because the one we were in, was between the two hills. Fortunately the owner had given us the other house’s keys for in case we needed to use it earlier the day. We set out and things got interesting… With the two damns overflowing and the road now even more like a stream, we had to hold onto each other to make it through… With Lynn and her sisters being fairly petite and short, when we got to the section where the one damn overflowed over the road, I had to make turns to carry Lynn and her other 2 sisters through as well as helping carry the food and stuff we could grab on our way out. We all made it through okay and the three girls and I ended up sitting up most of the night awaiting the arrival of the new year. It brings me back to the previous article I wrote, “Remembering The Good Old Days“….. I’ll never forget all the random laughter and crazy things you girls got up to and the many visits we shared. I’ll never forget the outpouring of love shown at the funeral of over 600 in attendance, because we were the ones whose lives you affected and graced with your presence!

Thinking about times together like this has a bitter-sweet feeling… It saddens you because that person you’re thinking of is gone, but it brings a small smile to your face because of the fun times you had and experiences you shared together. We want to remember the ones we’ve lost for the awesomeness they brought and laughter you shared together… For all the love they brought to your life and that you had the opportunity to love and be with them while they were still in our presence .

So if you’ve lost anyone close to you or someone you cared a lot for recently, keep strong, keep busy and it’ll get easier in time… Each day will be a little easier.

In loving memory of Lynn Bowers (7 August 1987 – 20 August 2011).

Always remember, give a jackass an education and you’ll have a smartass!
