Gauteng e-toll, Another Way We’ll Lose More Money

e-toll LogoI got this email recently about the new e-toll systems that have come up around Gauteng…

These “e-toll” systems are means of charging road users on the N1, N3, N12 and R21 in the Gauteng area by being “tolled by means of electronic and automated methods, thereby eliminating the need to queue at toll plazas. This automated non-stop method of collecting toll is referred to as e-toll.” (Extract from the e-toll website)…

There are some stories I’ve heard about why these tolls were put up. How true they are I’m not sure, but basically the reason is because the South African government borrowed money to build the 2010 soccer stadiums and this is their way of getting the money to pay back whoever it was they borrowed the money from.

Whatever their idea is and reasoning behind putting up these tolling systems may be, it comes down to taking more and more money from the average person on the street. It’s because of this that I thought it would be a good idea to put the email up on my blog to get it more exposure and have it get to as many people as possible. It definitely affects everyone in the Gauteng area, but by extension others around South Africa too and is a must read!

Here is what the email said:

Hi I hope you don’t mind me mailing this to you on this issue, but this came across my desk this morning.

I think, and I am sure that many of you are the same, that the tolls are a disgrace, both the extortionate toll fees themselves and also the widely published fact that we are expected to pay up to R18 BILLION over the next 10 years just to collect the toll fees. I wanted to share the clarity of thought in this mail and agree that I will not be installing anything on my car.

They are not going to have easy access to my bank account – they say they want a debit order – forget it. Send me a bill (by registered mail) every time – and I will pay it just as fast as I pay the speeding fines that arrive by normal post (which I also ignore).

Together we can make this whole thing fail – as it should. Let the toll gates stay there, not working, as monuments to people power.

Let’s call this the start of the SA Awakening, look what the normal people are achieving in North Africa with the Arab Awakening. Regards I hope this goes around at least a billion times. Taxes and Open Road Toll Fees People should not install the transponders but still use the highways and force the government to issue accounts and summonses to all motorists until such time they drop the prices. The government will be forced to send out millions of accounts every month and they don’t have the manpower to do it. This is the best and easiest way to boycott the system. What is the government going to do about motorists from other neighboring countries that don’t have these transponders? South Africans are too complacent and its time we fight back.

WE have paid for these roads. Now they are also proposing a 1% tax to fund the SABC.

Circulate this to all your friends!!!!!!!!

Has anyone thought just how much tax we are already paying?

a. 35% on your salary
b.14% on everything you buy (bar fresh produce) and services rendered.
c. Carbon tax if you buy a new car (besides the 14% VAT you have to pay)
d. Tax on the fuel you put in your car to run it.
e. Toll on our roads – and for some it is going to come to a whopper of 10% of your salary (If you earn R10 000.00 a R1 000 would go toward tolling if you migrate between PTA and JHB every day.) – Bully to try and pacify me with the idea that I can claim it back from my income tax!!! I have to fork out the money first. Going on holiday to DBN? Remember to save up your R1000.00 for tolling.

To say the least – For every R10.00 you earn, the government is already taking approx R6.00 and still they want more. Are you happy with the R4.00 you are getting? NICE!!!!!

When are we going to get up and do something about it? Where is all the money going to? It is definitely not being spent on what it should be – our hospitals are in a state of disrepair, our schools in shambles, our roads full of potholes, our water contaminated, sewers not working, left in the dark because Eskom failed to do their upgrades, the poor are poorer still, municipalities on the brink of collapse, and so the list goes on.

Heard about the youth day celebration that cost R100 million? Mmmm… did you pay for it? Oh yes sir/madam you did! R100 million that could have paid for a couple of things our country needed more.

And to put the numbers in perspective: The next time you hear an SA politician use the word ‘billion’ in a casual manner, think about whether you wanted the ‘politicians’ spending YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its press releases:

A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive. C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
E. A billion Rand ago was only 27 hours and 12 minutes at the rate our SA government is spending it. (a billion rand a day??!!)

  • Building Permit
  • Tax Cigarette
  • Tax Corporation Tax
  • Income Tax Value Added Tax
  • Fishing License Tax
  • Food License Tax
  • Fuel License Tax
  • Petrol/Diesel
  • Tax Hunting License Tax
  • Luxury Tax
  • Property Tax
  • Service charge taxes
  • Capital gains Tax
  • Social Security Tax
  • Securities Transfer Tax
  • Road Usage Tax
  • Local Tax
  • Vehicle License Registration Tax
  • Vehicle Sales Tax
  • Worker’s Compensation Tax

STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY? Hardly any of these taxes existed 20 years ago… And our nation was one of the most prosperous in Africa. We had absolutely no national debt… We had the largest middle class in Africa and Mum stayed home to raise the kids. What happened ? ANSWER : Look at the Government…..and who is ‘running’ the country…. INTO THE GROUND – on YOUR and MY ‘billions’!!!

I hope this goes around at least a billion times.

If You’re Gullible , You Can Google!

These WhatsApp rumours are getting old! Don’t they remind you of all the chain messages and stories spread that MXit would close down, or delete your account if you didn’t forward a specific message to x amount of people? Or the time the Facebook was going to start charging for using it or whatever?? The messages are all the same with the word order changing!

It got me thinking and wondering just how gullible some people are? … Quick, look up, gullible is written on the roof! … Say “Football” really slowly and it sounds like you’re saying gullible!

I guess some people just take things at face-value and don’t find out if what they’re being told is actually true. Others are just… I don’t know…. They just really gullible! We all know some people like that, which is all good and well when it’s for a joke now and again, but not when it starts spreading like wildfire and affects who knows how many hundreds of people around the world like these WhatsApp messages have and as result, those who forwarded the messages all hit their own panic stations.

Like seriously now, how legit do these messages ACTUALLY sound? :

“Whatsapp is shutting down on 28th Jan Message from Jim Balsamic (CEO of Whatsapp) we have had an over usage of user names on whatsapp Messenger. We are requesting all users to forward this message to their entire contact list. If you do not forward this message, we will take it as your account is invalid and it will be deleted within the next 48 hours. Please DO NOT ignore this message or whatsapp will no longer recognise your activation. If you wish to re-activate your account after it has been deleted, a charge of 25.00 will be added to your monthly bill. We are also aware of the issue involving the pictures updates not showing. We are working diligently at fixing this problem and it will be up and running as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation from the Whatsapp team”

“WhatsApp is going to cost us money soon. The only way that it will stay free is if you are a frequent user i.e. you have at least 10 people you are chatting with. To become a frequent user send this message to 10 people who receive it (2 ticks) and your WhatsApp logo should turn Red to indicate a frequent user.“

Think about it for a minute? With the ease of access to and abundance to information on the internet as there is today, surely the first thing you would, or at least should do, is open your internet browser on your phone, your PC or wherever… Go to trusty old Google and searching a phrase from or exactly what you were told? Am I right in assuming this or am I expecting a bit much from others?

Besides posting some points about this WhatsApp hoax on How To Work My Apple Device in an article entitled “WhatsApp Closing? WhatsApp Starting to Charge for Use? What’s Up?” here is a brief summary to show that these messages are as fake as Pamela Anderson’s boobs:

  • WhatsApp hasn’t, themselves, said that they will be charging users or closing down.
  • WhatsApp wouldn’t announce its plans to start charging for the service “via a vague and poorly worded instant message or Facebook post.”
  • WhatsApp would not make people prove they are frequent users by sending on a message to ten people.
  • Another reason why people won’t be charged for usage is due to this sentence which is on the WhatsApp website: “WhatsApp Messenger uses the same internet data plan that you use for email and web browsing, there is no cost to message and stay in touch with your friends”

Something to think about isn’t it? To find that info took me all of 1 minute to Google “whatsapp logo turn red” and read the first link which is a post by Hoax-Slayer. You can read that here if you really want to.

People should stop believing everything they get told!…

Question everything!

Yes, you heard me… Question everything! Even this blog article. “But why?” you may ask… Well here is why:

If you question everything it will be forced to find out if what you are being told is true and legit. Doing the quick research or finding out will help you find the correct answers. It also makes having that knowledge more worthwhile, because you made the effort to check what you have been said and you can with certainty forward on what you have learnt or share what you have learned.

I think that’s all I have to say about that for now 🙂

An Apple A Day, Might Mean You Need Some Help!

I’ve been helping a few people recently with their Apple device and as a result, this morning, I decided to start a section to my blog dealing specifically with helping people with the issues that they may come across when using their iPhone’s, iPad’s or even in iTunes.

I guess it all started back in the Summer of ’69. No no, that’s a joke. It started about 2 years ago when I bought myself my first Apple product. The phone 32GB 3GS. The original plan was that I wanted to go overseas to the UK and while I was there, I would buy myself a new phone. So I started researching the options and phones available on the market. My dad, dear old dad, often sitting next to me and supposed to be working while I researched the idea, would look over my shoulder to see what I was up to. I noticed his curiosity and started showing him the features and specs of the iPhone at the time.

Well, my plans to go over and visit the family in the UK fell flat, but I still wanted to get myself an iPhone. Looking around then at local shops in the Gauteng area and realising the price of the phone, I got a bit despondent. Fear not though, because I had myself a part-time job at Toys ‘R Us(being in school still at the time) in their electronics department, selling Playstations, Wii consoles, games, DVD’s and the rest, I saved up for the year and by November I could buy the phone. This is where the useless info about my dad checking out the phone comes in. See, what happened was… My research and showing him the iPhone impressed him to the point that he too wanted an iPhone. So he bought himself one too, identical to the one I got.

Being interested in all things geek… Well, almost all things, and loving technology and advances therein, I was fascinated by new iPhone and was quick to find little tips and trick when using the iPhone and iTunes. See, now my dad (also being a guy interested in the technology side of things) learnt many things too, but he would often ask for my help when. This meant I would often help him with sorting out some issues on his iPhone or iTunes, showing him some of the things I had learnt, but not everything 😛 You’ve got to keep some things for yourself, to keep others intrigued…

All was well for a while until my dad got his new iPhone 4 and gave his 3GS to my mum. Fortunately for me, helping my mom meant teaching her the basics. Then came my little brother’s iPod Touch. Now this kid just learns things straight away from watching you, so you’ve got to watch what you how him sometimes… It wasn’t long after that, when my dad got his iPad. This meant getting to fiddle on it and learn some tips and tricks on there too. Obviously it also meant teaching my old man how some of the stuff was done.

At this point, it’s important to note that we are now a family of Apple users and really love the products. My dad raves about them to all his colleagues and the family also notice the things we do on them. This meant that a few family members got themselves Apple iSomethings too and, my dad being my dad, mentioned how I would always help him with his issues. This didn’t include family members and colleagues of his that I may know, but those from within the company he works for too. See the thing is my dad will tell the people about the things they can do or need to get or something, which is all good and well, but the issue comes in most of the time when they ask him how to do the things he’s said. That’s when my contact details exchanges address books and I get calls asking for help.

Lately I would receive phone calls with the opening line “Hi. Is this Glynn?… I got your number from your father, he said you can help me with my iPhone/iPad/iTunes.” Pity I don’t know which of the lady callers, calling me are attractive and can tell them to hold onto my number or call me to just chat again. No no, I make joke… So I’ve been helping a few people lately and this meant repeating myself often to the different people. I really don’t mind helping people, I actually quite enjoy helping people around me when I know how…

So, it’s because of this that I decided to start a new blog, apart from this blog, where I will do my best to help others with issues and whatnot with their Apple iDevices, through my experiences and things I’ve learnt over time. As of earlier today, the page “How To Work My Apple Device” has gone up and I will start with something basic for my first article.

I believe that the page could help a few people and possibly give me the chance to impart some of my knowledge along the way. This is something new for me and I’m looking forward to this little adventure on the interwebs. I invite you to join me on the ride, but also to let me know if there are issues you may have with you Apple products, so I can see where I can help with.

Discovering & Starting Something New

Try Something New

Nearing the end of the year I look back on the year that’s passed and think about some of the highlights of the year and some of the things you hoped you’d forget, I found myself looking for some kind of “outlet” to keep myself busy and entertained. Not wanting to overdo things with certain friendships and find new ones that find that share similar likes too, I began to expand my  circle of friends, often contacting and re-establishing past friendships to find things I enjoy… It was during this that I took up a couple new hobbies, if you want to call it that…

Well, it started just before I moved to Cape Town when I joined some friends to the local cable ski where I was first introduced to wakeboarding behind a cable and not a boat. Not knowing what to expect, I gave it a try. Failing rather miserably, I  was determined to keep at it and get it right… It took a couple “launches” to get going, but get it right, I did! Managing only to make it down the first straight I started to get the hang of it.

Then about a month later I moved to Cape Town and wasn’t able to wakeboard again, because  I don’t have my own board and gear. Fortunately, 6 months later I moved Back to Gauteng and after a few weeks I joined up with my wakeboarding buddy and started again. Only getting to go wakeboarding a few times since I’ve been back I’ve made the decision to take up the sport more actively and am starting the process to get my own board and gear… You can’t sponge off people for too long, and I want my own stuff, you know how it goes.

Wakeboarding has given me the opportunity to find something to do, something other than lounging at home and being lazy, while being physically active and giving me the chance to often just clear my head. It’s something to do where you can meet more people and make some new friends too. If they at the wake park, they clearly going to like something you do. watching and learning from some of the more experienced guys also helps you meet others whose common interests and likeness are even closer to your own, starting with small things like how you ride(left or right foot forward), riding style and more. Although I still haven’t made it completely around, my goal: make it completely around and improve my riding skill is driven by my determination and being there virtually every weekend for the past 2 months or so.

Not all of us are into taking up something like wakeboarding and often also need to find another outlet or medium of clearing their head. Everyone needs something like this when they have a lot on their minds… Expanding your circle of friends helps as you can find others whose interests and likes you share. Not everyone wants something physically demanding like the wakeboarding, and that is where my Blogging came in. I may not be an active “blogger” like many others out there, but I use my blog to sit down and think… Often giving me the chance to think about things I probably wouldn’t have otherwise and put those thought to paper, so to speak.

I sometimes wish I had the creativity to keep my blog updated more regularly like many other people do, as it’s often quite interesting to read and notice how they think and reason. However I like to do a little it of everything and that is why I try things less physically demanding like a bit of the blogging, as well as something more physically demanding like wakeboarding and trying to gym as often as possible…

It may not be quite at its end, but the year is almost up and it’s time to take out the old and be in with the new… Sometimes a little self-reflection is all you need to get a clearer perspective on where you want to be and how you plan on getting to that point. If you have a moment to spare, I highly recommend this… Take a few minutes and think to yourself “What is there that I can give a try”… If everyone does and has something interesting they do in their spare time like wakeboarding, cycling, rock climbing or whatever, the world will definitely be a lot less dull and so will your friends. With over the 7 billion mark, it can get rather dull if people just stick to the usual mundane things.

Go out, find something new and exciting to do. It doesn’t have to be drastic, just something exciting and tell the people you know to do it also.

With that in mind…

Always remember, give a jackass an education and you’ll have a smartass!

Losing Someone Special

Its about 8 days and 13 hours today that I got the news that one of my dearest friends, who was like a sister to me, passed away unexpectedly. It leaves a massive gap in who and what you are…. Well for me that is.

Lynn is the first person I was close to that I’ve lost to the evil known as death…. So dealing with what’s happened since receiving word of the news has been a first for me. And one I don’t wish on any of my worst enemies(not that I really have any, that I know of).

The first few minutes are pure shock…. You don’t know what’s going on, you try to figure out if what you heard is what was actually said and then you break apart. Yes, I cried, I’m man enough to admit that, because if you don’t, well then you either have some major issues, or you are just a really heartless, lost soul.

Being one of the first people to receive the news, I took on the responsibility to let other mutual friends know what’s happened. You feel like crap when you tell people, and hearing their reaction to the news doesn’t help much for your already difficult situation wherein you’re trying your very best to maintain your composure. I called one of my friends, who you could clearly hear was out somewhere. His first reaction was “Dude if this is some kind of f***ed up joke…” Then silence as I told him again, “Dude, are you sure?” are the words I heard next. This went on for about another minute or so, but it felt like forever. He rushed to his car and called me again to tell me that he was making his way to JHB from PTA to see Lynn’s ex boyfriend, another mutual friend, who was still quite in love with her and had just got the news and wasn’t taking it well… I was glad, under the circumstances, that I never had to be the one to tell Lynn’s ex the news. Because according to what I was told from his reaction, you could see him break apart…. Not a pretty sight, but you can’t help but feel the same……

So if you haven’t lost anyone close to you, I’m not going sugar-coat it for you, it’s one of the most agonising things you will probably ever go through. But the saying you will always hear after people have heard about your loss, yes the “In time it becomes easier” line, is very true. It’s 6 days now, flying to Cape Town for the funeral, today since I got the news, and about 2 days after getting the news, each day you feel a little more able to smile and be yourself around others, but the feelings are overcome by guilt, feeling wrong that you could smile at something when your loved one is no longer with us. It’s all a very emotionally confusing time….Yeah I know i said it’s just over a week in the beginning of this article, but that’s when it’ll probably be posted and made live, after reviewing it a couple of times and making sure it’s got my stamp of approval.

Anyways, getting back to topic, it took me a day or two to start feeling a bit better. Yes, with each day, time begins to fill the huge gap that’s been left in your heart that mourns and yearns to see that person again, but it doesn’t make it all go away. Some days are also worse than others… Like you might be felling okay in the morning, then during the day, you hear a song or something that reminds you of something you did together, and it throws you 10 steps back, after you’ve been just barely able to make one step forward.

Flying to Cape Town on this early, and chilly August Friday morning, while I type the article, has given me a lot of time to think about my dear friend and things we did together…

I will never forget the new years eve weekend of 2006/2007…. Lynn’s family and my family hadn’t been friends for all that long, but we got along really well, so we decided we’d go up to this trout farm for the weekend. The first night was really great and we got to spend some time together getting to know each other better. The last night, on new years eve, we saw clouds coming in and didn’t think anything of it… Our parents were outside cooking dinner, while Lynn, her 2 other sisters, my brother and I were inside playing 30 Seconds. The next thing, we noticed that the clouds and mist had come in so dense and thick that we couldn’t even see a meter away from the door, and our parents weren’t visible through all this…. Then the rain started and before we knew it, it had rained so much that the trout dams started to overflow and the dirt, which was now a mud road that looked like a stream, had channelled the water in such a way that it was now coming into the house. Then we all hit panic stations. We grabbed everything we could carry and the little bit of food we could, and we had to go up to the house on the hill, because the one we were in, was between the two hills. Fortunately the owner had given us the other house’s keys for in case we needed to use it earlier the day. We set out and things got interesting… With the two damns overflowing and the road now even more like a stream, we had to hold onto each other to make it through… With Lynn and her sisters being fairly petite and short, when we got to the section where the one damn overflowed over the road, I had to make turns to carry Lynn and her other 2 sisters through as well as helping carry the food and stuff we could grab on our way out. We all made it through okay and the three girls and I ended up sitting up most of the night awaiting the arrival of the new year. It brings me back to the previous article I wrote, “Remembering The Good Old Days“….. I’ll never forget all the random laughter and crazy things you girls got up to and the many visits we shared. I’ll never forget the outpouring of love shown at the funeral of over 600 in attendance, because we were the ones whose lives you affected and graced with your presence!

Thinking about times together like this has a bitter-sweet feeling… It saddens you because that person you’re thinking of is gone, but it brings a small smile to your face because of the fun times you had and experiences you shared together. We want to remember the ones we’ve lost for the awesomeness they brought and laughter you shared together… For all the love they brought to your life and that you had the opportunity to love and be with them while they were still in our presence .

So if you’ve lost anyone close to you or someone you cared a lot for recently, keep strong, keep busy and it’ll get easier in time… Each day will be a little easier.

In loving memory of Lynn Bowers (7 August 1987 – 20 August 2011).

Remembering the Good Old Days

Over the past few months, I have moved away from the place I felt “at home” in to a completely new city and subsequently back “home.” During this time, throughout the process of moving away and moving back, there has been times when you sit and think back to the good times you spent with friends and family. thinking about these memories sometimes bring happiness and others sometimes bring some sadness, but more often than not as a result of these memories, it’s made us the people we are today, for the better or the worse.

Sometimes you won’t even purposely be thinking about specific memories, but the get triggered as a result of a song, watching a movie or smelling a specific perfume/cologne. Sometimes these unforced flashbacks to times of the past bring out the most awkward, yet strangely satisfying laugh or grin to a persons face.

With all the moving away and meeting new people, I often heard about many good memories friends shared and stories they could tell of the things they got up to when they were younger or even things they did more recently. Watching their facial expressions change while relating the story was quite an experience. Seeing the way some of them could animate their faces was quite interesting, but then again, they must have felt the same when they listened to the stories of the good and bad memories I had about times back “home”… Many times after telling them about how one of my best friends and I would get up to mischief or when we would climb up onto his house’s roof and throw eggs or lemons at the people who happened to walk by, I would send him a text and see how he’s doing or call the guy. Other times after relating a story about a girl you liked and how things didn’t work out, talking about it a year or so down the line with these newly found friends makes you realise it’s maybe just as well that things didn’t work out. You can’t help but think “I wonder how things would have turned out if….”

Moving back home and seeing all these old friends again and speaking about the same memories with them brings out many other stories of things we did together of things we may have forgotten. Some reminiscing of these times is always fun. Okay maybe not always, especially when the you think about some events or things you want to forget, but for the most part, chatting about the time we washed out the dustbin’s on rubbish collection day and hid inside them, only to give the people a fright who came to dig inside them, or causing minor havoc down the street or even the time we played “donker kammertjie” and a mutual friend ended up walking directly into my mates’ sister and grabbed her boobs, blaming the room being all dark for the ‘accident’…. Hahaha… Ah yeah, good times.

Out of all the story telling and listening to stories told by friends, I came to realise that we really need to keep in mind and Remember the Good Old Days. It’s not just there for a rainy day when you’re feeling low and think about the fun you had in the past, but also for the times when you’re stuck in traffic and that song you danced to with friends of your cousin from London were visiting starts playing on the radio. Or when you walk past a girl in a shopping centre and she wears a perfume that reminds you of a girl you once knew (or still do)… Or for the times you go see a friend and you think about the funny things you used to do and say.

Keep these memories close, because they the ones that often ones that keep us sane when we’re feeling down, even though we might start smiling for no apparent reason to onlookers, it’s the what you’re thinking about that matters.

Some of those memories you’re thinking of now… Yes that one when you slipped and fell in front of a crowd, or the time someone made you laugh so much, what you were drinking came out your nose(Gross I know, but it happens)… Give the people involved in those Good Old Times a call and say “Hi”… Make plans to get together again, and make more memories and reminisce about times in the past.

Signing off.

Always remember, give a jackass an education and you get a smartass.
